Understanding Oral Surgery: A Brief Overview

Oral surgery in Seattle is a specialized field of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing and treating various conditions that affect the mouth, haws, and surrounding tissues. This branch of dentistry involves surgical procedures that address complex dental problems, often requiring more extensive intervention than routine dental treatments. Oral surgery encompasses a range of procedures. The main goal of oral surgery is to restore oral health, function, and aesthetics, often improving the quality of life of patients.

Common oral surgery procedures include:

Tooth Extractions

Tooth extraction is a fundamental oral surgery procedure involving the removal of a tooth that is severely decayed, damaged, or impacted. This procedure may be straightforward, involving teeth that are fully erupted and accessible, or complex, requiring the removal of impacted teeth, such as wisdom teeth that have not fully emerged from the gums. Extraction may also be necessary for orthodontic reasons to create space for teeth alignment.

Dental Implants

Dental implant surgery is a surgical procedure designed to replace missing teeth. It involves placing a titanium post into the jawbone, which acts as a replacement root for a dental crown. This procedure requires careful planning and often includes a healing period during which the implant integrates with the bone. Once fully integrated, a custom-made crown is placed on top, providing a functional and natural-looking replacement tooth.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is often performed in preparation for dental implants, particularly if there has been significant bone loss in the jaw. This procedure involves transplanting bone material to the jawbone to provide a solid foundation for placement.

Signs That You Might Need Oral Surgery: What to Look For

Oral surgery in Seattle is often necessary when dental issues become too complex for standard treatments to address effectively. Identifying the signs that you might need oral surgery can help you seek timely intervention and prevent further complications.

  • Persistent Tooth Pain: Severe, persistent tooth pain that does not improve with standard treatments may signal the need for oral surgery.
  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, often become impacted, meaning they do not fully emerge from the gums. This can lead to pain, swelling, and infection.
  • Severe Gum Disease: Advanced periodontal (gum) disease can lead to significant bone loss around the teeth, potentially requiring surgical treatment.
  • Difficulty Chewing or Speaking: If you have difficulty chewing or speaking due to misalignment or damage to the jaws, orthognathic surgery may be indicated.
  • Missing Teeth: If you have missing teeth and are considering dental implants as a replacement option, you may need a bone graft to ensure there is sufficient bone density for the implant.
  • Trauma or Injury: In cases of facial trauma or injury, such as fractures or severe lacerations, oral surgery may be necessary to repair and restore function. This includes procedures to fix broken bones, realign displaced teeth, or reconstruct damaged oral tissues.
  • Bone Loss or Degradation: Bone loss in the jaw, often due to tooth loss or advanced gum disease, can make it difficult to place dental implants or support existing teeth.

Recognizing these signs and seeking timely consultation with an oral surgeon can help address complex dental issues effectively. Oral surgery can provide relief, restore function, and enhance overall oral health.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

One the most common procedures are the removal of wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth – the last four teeth on the top and bottom of your mouth – typically surface between the ages of 17 and 25. Most people don’t have room the in the jaw to accommodate them and need to have them extracted. Often times the teeth become impacted because of the lack of room to properly surface.

Types of impacted teeth:

  • Soft Tissue Impaction – Though the crown of the tooth has broken the surface, a portion of gum still covers part of the tooth. Food can become trapped in the gum flap allowing for decay and infection.
  • Partial Bony Impaction – The tooth has partially surfaced, but part of it is still below the gum and bone. This is also prone to infection and decay because of cleaning difficulties.

If your wisdom teeth are are causing dental issues, it’s to your benefit to have them removed.
